Cultural Arts Curriculum
A student creating an Arabic tessallation

The ACES project incorporated cultural arts presentations and visiting artists from the community organizations into the Arabic and Chinese curriculum to motivate students and create interest in studying these  more difficult, less familiar, and therefore typically less elected languages. Cultural arts presentations supported interdisciplinary planning between project teachers and teachers from other content areas. Each school held cultural arts presentations to promote the language awareness and increase interest in Arabic or Chinese among staff members and students in the entire school.

Examples of Cultural Arts presentations supported by the ACES Project:

Discover Arabic at Sanford Middle School - Annual event included three days of music,

dance, storytelling, food sampling, mosaic, and Arabic calligraphy.

  • Community Garden -  High school students of Chinese created rock markers painted with Chinese calligraphy to identify plants in the Edison Community Garden.
  • Chinese music and drumming - Presentations by community artists to all schools in MPS offering Chinese
  • Chinese calligraphy - Community artists presented calligraphy workshops at schools offering Chinese
  • Paper mosaic murals - Created by students at Lyndale Elementary and Sanford Middle School with Arab community artist
