The ACES project supported new language teachers of Arabic and Chinese to become highly qualified by implementing intensive professional development programs on designing articulated curriculum, integrated performance assessments and improving instruction. The ACES project partnered with the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition(CARLA) at the University of Minnesota to provide professional development on designing

standards-based curriculum and performance assessments for Chinese and Arabic; the use of formative and summative assessments to inform instruction; and integrating technology to enhance second language acquisition. The ACES project also involved college-level instructors of Arabic and Chinese to review curriculum, assessment, benchmarks, and student work samples to extend articulation efforts beyond the K-12 and across institutions.

ACES Technology Integration Workshop

The ACES project teachers attended and presented at regional and national conferences, which provided the teachers valuable opportunities to network with professionals from around the country, gain the knowledge of effective instructional strategies, and to integrate technology into instruction.

planning curriculum, and cultural arts presentations.

During week-long summer professional development workshops, ACES teachers collaborated on the development of standards-based thematic units with integrated performance assessments. The workshops were lead by the ACES project director, Gaelle Berg, project coordinator, Ayumi Stockman, and the assessment coordinator from CARLA, Ursula Lentz.
