MPS World Languages Propay Cohort 2017 - 2018

Effective Language Instruction, Teaching with Comprehensible Input

Nothing motivates like success!  When the teacher makes the target language comprehensible to students, the students are engaged in learning, and they have more success in acquiring the target language.

Teaching with Comprehensible Input can make this happen.  In this cohort, you’ll:

·         learn about the SLA theories that inform the importance of comprehensible input

·         learn how to teach students necessary skills to acquire another language

·         master the basic strategies

·         plan how to apply this approach in your actual teaching.

Overarching goals:

1. Participants will apply strategies and skills to teach with comprehensible input and stay in the target language 90% of the time.

2. Students will have increased proficiency in the target language.

For advanced practitioners:

1. Participants will refine the strategies and skills to provide comprehensible input and to stay in the target language 90% of the time.

2. Participants will identify a goal area and work towards refinement in the following suggested areas:

- Move towards more non-prescribed, spontaneous personalized questions and answers,

- Increase student engagement,

- Bridge input and output,

- Become more adept at teaching mini novels and advanced grammar structures. 


1.  Four seven-hour sessions on Saturdays

2.  Two hour action research training

3.  Two classroom coaching and feedback sessions

4.  Data collection and analysis

5.  Action research paper


Participants will be eligible for one lane change on the salary scale upon a successful completion of the cohort and action research paper.  (It is about $1,000 permanent increase.)

Session 3: Saturday, January 13th – 8:30am – 4:00pm
Session 4: Saturday, March 3rd – 8:30am – 4:00pm
